The Weston Hospital Broadcasting Society (W.H.B.S) was established in 1978 by a dedicated group of friends from the West Woodspring Rotaract Club. Their mission was to enhance the hospital experience for patients by offering a diverse range of programmes to cater to all tastes.
Launching a major fundraising campaign, W.H.B.S aired its first program on July 26, 1978, during a time when John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John were topping the U.K. charts with "You're The One That I Want."! Since that day, they have been broadcasting continuously!
In 1983, plans were set in motion to merge four local hospitals into a new general hospital. This transition required W.H.B.S to relocate from their original studios in the attic of Eastern House, Landermann Circus, to the new facility on Grange Road in Uphill.
As part of this change, the station adopted the name Sunshine Radio. To support the move, an independent organization called the Friends of Sunshine Radio was formed to raise the £20,000 needed to build and equip the new studio facilities. The studio became operational on the morning the new hospital opened its doors in 1986.
Since then, they have continued to thrive, and currently have plans to establish a second studio that would allow volunteers to offer an even wider selection of programmes for the patients.
If you'd like to get involved with Sunshine Hospital Radio then we’d love to hear from you! Even if you’re unsure about meeting our requirements, try us - your unique qualities may be just what we’re looking for. Don't hesitate to Contact Us.
